BEAUTY ETIQUETTE

Most of us like to think we have the basics of beauty etiquette all sewn up. But how long has it been since you've had a manicure, tamed your eyebrows or cleared out your bulging handbag? In these time-poor times, activities such as eating, sleeping and grooming can get cut short. But is all that preening really that important anyway? Apparently, yes.

"Forget all the proverbs about not judging a book by its cover," says Marianne Vicelich, author of Bat Your Eyelashes: How To Be Well Mannered With Style and The Glossy Life: How To Be Glamorously Economic (both self-published). "First impressions are unfortunately face-value evaluations based on appearance that do count." So in this competitive world, a shining personality may not outshine a bad hair day. So what gets a beauty black spot and is it possible to stay impeccable and unflappable? With a little planning and practise, you won't have a hair out of place.

The five deadly beauty sins

Too much perfume
Acquire a signature scent and keep it subtle. "Unless the person you're speaking with is in hugging range, they should not be able to smell you.

Lipstick on your teeth
Keep lips in tip-top condition with gentle sugar scrubs and hydrating balms to avoid bleeding lipstick. After applying lipstick, blot, then move your finger in and out of your mouth. Excess lippie will come off on your finger rather than your teeth.

Blender bender
Dior's national make-up artist, Sarah Wallbank, says bad blending is bad beauty manners, "from obvious foundation lines to badly drawn batwing eyeliner. These mistakes make it obvious you're wearing make-up and detract from your natural beauty." Wallbank advises testing foundation on your jaw line. Apply with a foundation brush and begin in the centre of the face, working upwards.
For a perfect pout, lip liner needs to match lipstick and be applied all over to avoid the dreaded outline.

Partner preening
Don't squeeze each other's pimples in public, please. Keep it behind closed doors.

Chipped nail polish

If you haven't managed a mani-pedi for months, remove chipped polish and leave fingernails natural until you can get to the salon. Cover toes with ballet flats. Try QM Lounge,08033316666

lip tips
While some grooming activities, such as applying lipstick, have become acceptable in public, some are too intimate. "It's socially acceptable to reapply lipstick at the restaurant table, but I wouldn't whip out the foundation. They don't call the bathroom the powder room for nothing!" "Other personal grooming faux pas include brushing your hair or picking your skin in public. Also, beware of tangerine-coloured fake tans and tide marks [that come] from not blending in foundation properly." Check yourself in the mirror and don't give away your beauty secrets.

How to stay impeccably groomed

Breathe. Just because you're nervous, doesn't mean anyone needs to know. Before any engagement, sit alone, warming up your voice by singing high and low. This ensures your voice does not give away nervousness by quivering.

Preparation. Prepare your outfit the evening before. Press and accessorise it. This way, you'll never be rushed in the morning.

Positive thinking. This is a vital tool. Practise it before you go to sleep and first thing in the morning.

Accessorise. Clean shoes, a well-kept handbag (not over-stuffed) and unique accessories to keep your look fresh are vital. You can wear the same skirt and shirt every day and transform it by changing your accessories.

Style your hair. If you don't know how, practise. If you have straight hair, use irons to finish it off or pop in Velcro rollers while doing your make-up. Learn how to use styling products and experiment; don't wear your part on the same side every day.

Make-up. Buy three latest lipstick shades each season. You can keep your make-up natural if you are updating your lipstick colour. Try Mac Lipstick, Bobbi Brown, Milani...+2348122220660

YOUR EVERYDAY SKIN CARE ROUTINE

I believe you are all so inspired by the great makeup & skin care tips I have published so far but i also think i need to explain further the importance of taking care of your skin.
There's nothing worse than spending so much on makeups & not having a good skin to show for it. The truth is if your skin doesn't feel good, your makeup wouldn't look good!

Especially with all the fabulous makeup products we are trying, it is important to make sure our skin is in prime condition to cope with the demands that these products will put on our skin.

Here are some basic steps for us all to look at with our daily and weekly routines – I am not going to talk about using specific brands but I will …

Step 1 – Cleaning

Use a good quality cleansing product that will remove any remaining traces of makeup from the day/night before. Make sure that the cleanser is one designed for your skin type, as using the wrong type can cause as many problems as it solves.

Makeup Remover
For the most stubborn waterproof makeup, I recommend an oil based makeup remover. There are lots on the market and you don’t need to spend a lot of money in this area to get an effective makeup remover.

Step 2 – Tone

Most toners will help to remove any last traces of makeup and cleanser and will also restore the natural PH balance to your skin.

Step 3 – Exfoliate
Exfoliation is a process that removes dead skin cells from the top layer of skin, allowing new rejuvenated skin to surface and may help improve the appearance of fine lines and mild acne.

Step 4 – Moisturize

This is the final step of your daily routine and getting the right moisturizer is cornerstone of good skin care. Moisturizing forms a barrier between the skin and environmental conditions. It also helps to form a fine, protective layer that enables the skin to retain the moisture it requires. Moisturizing is essential for all skin types including oily skin.

QUICK NOTES:

We all have different and unique skin. so what is right for one person may not be the best for another person, so we need to identify the right product for us.

I have done lots of research on many different brands so if you do have specific question on individual brands give me a shout.

Many Thanks,
Oye-Ebony

How to Contour!

Contouring your face can sound like an intimidating task that should be left to the professionals. But we want that whether you want to make your face look thinner, your nose longer or make your cheekbones stand out, contouring is the quickest and easiest way to change the overall look of your face. Since your face is a combination of light and shadows, adding a darker contour shade creates false shadows which give the appearance of depth.

Contouring with Cream

Use a cream concealer that is two shades darker than your skintone.
Use your finger to apply under the cheekbones.
Add a small amount under the chin.
To thin your nose, apply on each side beginning at the bridge of the nose.
Set with powder.

Contouring with Powder

Use an angled brush and a pressed powder 2 shades darker than your skin.
Use the same tricks as with the cream only using your brush instead of your finger.
Use a clean brush to buff out any lines.

Recommended products:
Milani cream concealer
MAC Mineralized Skin finish Milani bronzer of your choice)
NARS Loose Powder -
Milani Mineral powder
Bh cosmetics blush brush & kabuki brush

Tips:
Not everyone needs to contour- if you feel that your cheekbones are prominent or that your face is thin, it is best not to contour as you may appear too “chiseled”
ALWAYS choose a cream or powder that is just 2 shades darker than your skin- any darker, and it looks unnatural
If you use cream to contour, make sure to apply after your foundation and before your setting powder
It takes practice getting the contour technique down as each face is different, so don’t give u!

HOW TO GET GLOWING SKIN.

1. Take off all your makeup using a makeup remover (ponds cold cream works great). just wet your face and rub it in then gently wipe off with a wet wash cloth.

2. Using a gentle facial cleanser like purpose gentle cleansing wash or Johnson's baby wash. Rub it all over your face then wipe off with a wet wash cloth. After that, splash your face with warm water to make sure all of the product is off.

3. Get a facial buff (which you can get at any drug store). Add some of your facial cleanser and wet it then exfoliate your face with it. Be careful not to rub too hard. After you've finished, splash your face with warm water again then pat your face dry with a towel.

4. Get an ice cube and rub it all over your face and under your eyes then pat your face dry with a towel. This will close up all your pores and get rid of any puffiness you might have.

5. Witch hazel is a great astringent. Using a cotton ball or a piece of toilet paper put some on it and swipe it all over your face. This will get rid of any remaining dirt that may be on your face and help to clear up any pimples you have. If you don't have witch hazel you can use any mild astringent.

6. Moisturize. Moisturizing is key to clear skin no matter what type of skin you have including oily. Try to find one that doesn't have have much added fragrance in it. Anything mild will do the trick. A vitamin c lotion would be best if you have any marks or scars on your face because it will help to fade them.

7. If you have dark circles, fine lines, under eye puffiness, or if you just want to prevent wrinkles, you might want to use an eye cream.

Useful Tips for getting a healthy skin:

** Eat more fruits and vegetables

** Drink plenty of water

** Always wash your makeup off at night. if you sleep in your makeup over night it will clog your pores.

** Don't pick any pimples you have, this will cause them to scar. If your going to pop them get a wash cloth and put some hot water on it and hold it over the blemish for a few seconds then try to pop it, if it wont pop never force it to, just wait till it comes to the surface.

** Only exfoliate your face once or twice a week! Over exfoliating may cause irritation.

** Never touch your face with dirty hands, always wash them first.

** If you find you breakout on your back or chest it could be your shampoo/conditioner try switching to a milder one or a higher end brand. Also dove white soap is what most dermatologists recommend if you have this problem.

** Folic acid and b complex vitamins are great for your skin.

** Use a silk pillow cover, it prevents bacteria and oil build up on your pillow and therefore prevents break outs.

** Get a proper amount of sleep and try not to stress too much.

** If you have itchiness and oily skin then you can go for oats with Lemon facial. Take two spoons of oats and one spoon of lemon juice and smash the mixture. Apply them on to your skin after it gets dry wash it off with Luke water. If you need you can gently scrub it on your Skin.

** Apply olive oil once in a week and give a gentle massage.

** If a blemish pops up you can use any type of spot treatment, just dab a little on and let it set. Clean and clear advantage acne spot treatment works well or anything with salicylic acid in it.

** Add a few drops of lavender oil to a bowl of warm water, using a spotlessly clean face washer, dip it into the fragrant water and use as a facial compress. Do this after cleansing for a more thorough cleanse, it's great just before bedtime as lavender oil promotes sleep.

** Figure out what might be causing your skin to break out, you might be using a new product that could be irritating your skin.

** And if all else fails you can always fake it by putting some concealer over your blemishes, putting some foundation on, setting it with a light powder, and adding a little bronzer to your cheeks with a light shimmer in it. Never cake on your foundation or concealer, because if you do you might not be covering your blemishes you might just be adding more attention to them.

** If you're currently using anything on your face with a lot of harsh chemicals, it might be breaking you out. Just because something says "acne fighting" doesn't always mean its going to prevent acne. It could actually be drying your skin out causing your skin to produce more oil which then leads to clogged pores.

I suggest that you visit any drug store such as healthplus, medplus for recommended products.

HOW TO APPLY MAKEUP WHEN YOU HAVE ACNE

This is a simple step-by-step guide on how to apply make-up when you have acne. If you have very bad acne, then it's best to go to your doctor. If you have mild to moderate acene that can be covered easily with make-up, then read on.

1. To start off with, use a full-coverage, oil-free foundation (choose one that's a shade darker than your skin). Avoid applying more than one layer of foundation as this can draw attention to your skin. Normally, one layer should be enough to cover acne blemishes. If you have to apply a little more, make sure it stays natural-looking and not cakey.

2. If you have oily skin, apply a powder on top. This is to ensure the makeup stays and to control shine.

3. If you have acne, the best thing to do is to concentrate on your eyes. Drawing attention to your eyes and away from the blemishes. Apply top liner to your upper eyelid and make it nice and thick. Then, apply bottom liner and make it thick, yet elegant. Apply some mascara to wake up your eyes and give them that "cat eye" effect.

4. Apply some blusher. This adds color to your skin and reduces the visibility of acne. Applying a bronzer can add color and radiance. Apply a shade that's one shade darker than your foundation.

5. Apply some lipstick to give you the complete look. If you're wearing bronzer, then shades of mauve, nude and brown can look very sexy.

6. This should hide your skin flaws but remember to treat your acne at the same time. Use topical acne treatments from your doctor, and look after your skin by using gentle skin cleansers and by drinking water to draw out toxins from your skin.

7. Eating a well-balanced diet can also help, but eating chocolate and fatty foods do not cause acne.

USEFUL TIPS!!

* Always wash off your make-up before you go to bed; wearing foundation or concealer while you sleep can clog your pores.

* If you use soap and a washcloth to cleanse your face, make sure to use a new washcloth daily and change face towels every week! Both are breeding grounds for bacteria!

* Use a gentle cleaner morning and night to remove make-up.

* Use oil-free moisturizer.

* It is highly recommended to visit a dermatologist as they will give you treatment to rid you of acne.

* Use a toner only in the morning and never more than once a day.

I really hope you find this helpful.

HOW TO AVOID A CAKEY FACE!

You know we’ve all at one time or another applied too much foundation or concealer and ended up with what I like to call “Cakey Face”. This is a common dilemma when it comes to makeup, below are some easy steps on how to get more natural looking skin!

1. Apply a face primer
This step helps prime your skin just as paint primer preps your walls before applying paint: it smooths out the surface filling in pores and making the surface smoother for the foundation. Primers have just recently become standard in makeup products- Face primer works well if you have dry skin, but It may be too oily looking on combination to oily skin.

2. Don’t apply too much foundation
Now I realize that if you want full coverage or have many blemishes you’d like to cover, the first thing you think is to apply a fair amount of foundation. This will cover the blemishes BUT will also risk the chance of piling up and looking very mask like. The better option is to apply a thin layer just to even out your overall skin, then go over with concealer on just the blemished areas.

3. Apply powder only to oily areas
This is the key step! ONLY apply powder to the areas on your face that tend to get oily- usually the “T zone”. If you have dry skin, you may even be able to skip powder altogether. The trick is to also apply powder in a thin layer- I find the best way to do this is to use a thin, flat sponge.

4. Mist setting spray
This step is optional- U should only do this step if your skin looks a bit dry after applying powder. I recommend MAC’s Fix Plus spray- simply mist it all over your face after your makeup is done. It will give a subtle glow to the skin and help “melt” the powder into your foundation. If your skin is oily, I suggest that you skip this step as it can make it look more oily at the end of the day…

ALWAYS remember to apply makeup in thin layers at a time- you can always add more, but it’s very difficult to take away. I really hope this helps you all in your quest of getting flawless looking skin!

Stay happy and healthy!

much love,
Oye-Ebony
